I bought a few older engines, a 5.5 Hp Johnson and a 10 hp Evinrude and this piece was with them but it does not look like anything is missing on them. I was wondering if it looked familiar to anyone. Thanks for your help! Tom
It does have the OMC Stamping on the side of the piece. Maybe it’s from an OMC mower or Snowmobile?

Mystery Solved! Thanks very much for your help! This was the fuel tank that came with the motors.

The tank you pictured has a vented cap, and therefore does not need the vent that you posted a picture of. The “vented” tank has a non vented cap.

Changes in laws made the vented cap illegal because it can emit fuel vapors. Even slop gas out if full. The mystery vent is a one-way vent, allowing air to enter the tank but not escape. It probably also has an over-pressure relief to let air out before it blows up. I suspect somebody has defeated it by installing that hairpin clip on top.
