I often find myself grinding down an old screwdriver to fit such items on carbs.
After that, it’s a judgement call on whether or not it’s worth snapping it off
or clean the carb best you can with it in.

For the time being I’m going to proceed with it stuck in place. If the motor doesn’t run I’ll revisit the problem.

Would the Mercury float being a little shorter cause any problems?

No the height is not a problem. The hole will need to be drilled to a larger diameter to fit your brass float needle. An additional tiny hole will need to be drilled on the flat top for the tiny brass wood screw. The wood screw holds the wire clip, and the clip goes into the groove on the needle. The whole clip and groove assembly keeps the top of the float at the correct height, and that’s what’s important.

Regarding the check valve, I have used an impact driver to loosen them, but with a light hammer, and abundance of patience. Those carbs are pretty rugged. The valve and screen usually need a cleaning, or the low speed circuit will not work well.
