must be getting old… I was planning to convert my mid 50s CD to pump when I noticed the handle would not turn. tried and tried no go
took it apart both rods mate ok and turn perfectly from STOP TO FAST . I reinstalled the black handle and retaining bolt… throttle is locked !! won’t trun
inside the black handle in the bottom are 2 protusions 180 apart that will only aling with the handle metal frame and LOCK the throttle handle from truning…
what am i doing wrong 🙁 see nothces in picture

March 3, 2026 at 3:30 pm #305352I am not clear from your text whether or not you disconnected the throttle at the mag plate and checked to see if the mag plate itself would rotate.
I remember once having that problem; the mag plate would not turn. At all. Turned out to be a screw that was just a bit too long. One of the 4 screws that hold the plate down. The extra length was hitting and causing the issue.
March 3, 2026 at 3:48 pm #305357mag plate is OK all good except when I reinstall the handle and retaing bolt the inner part with 2 notches mate into the metal handle notches otherwise the retaining bolt won’t line up as I try to push fit the black handle all the way in ..
the handle will then be locked solid and won’t turn to rotate gears and mag plate.
this is just one of those crazy things Duh.. I know it can be fixed … having a mental block at the moment

March 3, 2026 at 4:13 pm #305369There are a few things that might cause this issue. First, that friction cup (piece with the arrow on it) often gets jammed on the inside of the twist grip handle due to lack of lube/dried up lube. The friction cup locks in place on the tiller handle, so those mating surfaces must be lubed so they won’t jam together. Most times, the friction cup stays stuck in the twist grip when you remove the twist grip. Once the twist grip is off, you will need to use some sort of right angle pick to pop that friction block out of there. Be sure to lube up the mating/angled surface of the friction block before reinstallation.
The next issue is not quite as obvious. Look at that metal throttle indicator band pictured at the lower left of your drawing. this piece often loses its tight fit on/over the aluminum tiller handle, gets a little loose on there. The indicator band jams up on the twist grip when this happens. If this happens, simply remove the twist grip, then slide the indicator band off the tiller handle. Once it is off, compress it a bit so it will fit tightly on the tiller handle when you reinstall it. Apply a little grease to the outer end of the band that tucks under the twist grip to minimize friction/jamming at this point as well.
March 3, 2026 at 6:05 pm #305409Don, thanks for your insight I will dig down the handle deep end to pull out all those parts , clean them up and regrease.
Everyting front wise works fine when I turn the “throttle” rod with pliers I remember putting this beauty away a few years ago and certainly don’t recall this problem…. Patience brings joy ! Had the clutch welded ..reasealed the GC and pressure tested it and clean out the carbon crud. I’ll give it a run this summer and give my merc a rest 🙂

If the throttle shaft turns OK with the pliers, than I am confident the issue is one of the two things I mentioned. Hope it works out. D
March 4, 2026 at 12:06 pm #305714well. success. I emptied out the handle, removed all grease inspected things , saw no reason for not turning. Reassembled it all adding a few drops of 3in1 oil down the sides to loosen up residual grease at he bottom and facilitate the rotation of the bottom part ( with the notches) and bolted it up.
silly thing rotated perfectly …I have no real clue why it was locking up before Link & sink perfect with cam notch, cam follower and handle pointer on START
one of those stranger things I guess.
Don, thanks for your suggestion 🙂

It is amazing how that dried up grease almost turns to glue!
