I’m working on a Champion 1J. It has a history of chronic overheating. After cleaning the debris from the water tube it runs and seems to cool ok. After a 20 minute run the cylinder and head are cool to the touch, or slightly warm. But there is no water spraying out of the exhaust relief holes. Is this normal?
I’m running a Champion D16 spark plug with a rubber boot. The plug and boot extend too far out to allow installation of the three piece cowl cover. Is there a solution that will allow me to use the cover with a modern spark plug. When I got the engine it had an uninsulated terminal that screwed to the plug and it was being used without the cowl cover. It seems that the aluminum cowl cover is rather close to the plug terminal, so I would like to use a boot. I have two older plugs, a Champion C-7 and a Blue Crown 5 that seem to be shorter, but they are in marginal condition.
The carburetor has always had chronic leakage problems. Even with the petcock closed and the tank vent closed, fuel still leaks out and empties the tank. Also, there is usually leakage around the packings on the needle valves. I can tighten the packing nuts and the leaks are diminished, but then the needle valves won’t turn without breaking the plastic knobs. Any hints on how to correct this would be appreciated. The carburetor is a Tillotson ME1A.
I’ve been using TCW-3 mixed 3/4 pint oil to one gallon of gas. Can I run a leaner mixture?
Any other hints for this engine are appreciated.
