OMC clutch dogs 18-25 hp in the fifties-sixties, or others, were identified as to fwd/reverse sides. The forward side was scored on the protruding flats.
When rebuilding lower units, several members suggest reversing the clutch dog to put the wear on the opposite side. My NOS stock has been depleted on a couple of frequently used clutch dogs. If they were identified as to forward and reverse, what is the difference? I don’t want to Band-Aid a repair by swapping sides, or grind off a hardened surface.

Are you asking what the difference is between the forward and reverse side of the dog, other than the fact that the forward has the scores on the lugs? Nothing.

That is the question. Why were the lugs scored, and the position mentioned in the assembly? If the sides are interchangeable this wouldn’t be necessary.

Probably done so it could be reinstalled the same way it came out.

              That’s my understanding.
