I am looking for a source or coils to replace on my Elgin Model Number 571.58901.
This is a variable h.p. motor with key selectable from 5.5, 7.5 to 12 h.p.
I have seen some replacements from overseas manufactures [(Zyphrong -?) – light green colored case, plastic with short leads].
I have no idea how to cross reference these as replacements.
The parts manual listed WICO X7500. Core is 5/8″.
Thanking you in advance.

July 21, 2026 at 9:51 am #324900With the larger 5/8″ laminates your choices are limited. The Chinese coils you mention will not work.
Many of us resort to parts motors or “parts magneto plates” frequently found at our meets. There are still lots of those motors around so finding parts might not be so hard.
Can you post a picture of your mag plate?
July 21, 2026 at 11:09 pm #324946Depending on the configuration of the mag plate and armatures , the 5/8 “armature can be cut down to fit the common OMC coils. I don’t know about your particular situation.

This video link will show you how I modified the Wico laminates to use an OMC style coil on a 3/4 hp. Waterwitch. You need to have them clamped tightly together when drilling out the rivets. I just used an old Evinrude coil I had. Don’t buy the black coils as they can be glued to the laminates so you can’t get them off. Get the green ones. There is a USA company that still makes these coils but they are a bit more expensive compared to the ones made in China. A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
August 21, 2026 at 10:28 am #326853the green coils were sourced to me before. the plastic shell cracked when I slid them onto the coil stack. Wish I had only paid $20 each. thanks for the link and video.
