In the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) used in Canada, the U.S., and several Caribbean countries, an exchange (central office code, NXX) cannot begin with 0 or 1. It must start with a digit from 2 through 9.
Telephone numbers are formatted as:
NPA-NXX-XXXX
- NPA = Area code
- NXX = Exchange (central office code)
- XXXX = Subscriber number
