I have both of these as 1925 models.
Note that the slightly older one on the left
has the water outlets go into curly pig tales,
      and water exiting to atmosphere.

The slightly newer model has the water outlet
going thru the exhaust manifold and into the
      exhaust stream.

The first one where you can “see” the flow sounds like
      a better idea.
Was this a mid year change in design or was the later
      model modified by someone?

Does the later one have the same flywheel
        with the large holes?

I would say both flywheels are the same.

          The older, nicer flywheel

The newer, rusty, but sand blasted flywheel.

I believe some one has altered the one going into exhaust manifold.

The system, as modified with the water going to a common exit, probably won’t work. The reason for the pigtails is to slow the water rate going out, and to assure that BOTH cylinders are cooling. With the system as modified, it’s unlikely that both cylinders will cool at the same rate. I would not run this without constant temperature monitoring of both cylinders.

Interesting. You got to wonder why someone modified it in the first place.

My guess is they can break off from the vibration.
This is how the motor came to me. I don’t know
how well this worked or if it was ever run this
way. I have since replaced it.

Looks like your motor may have proved your point!
