Hey all!
I just got a junky ol FD-12 up and running after only minimal work on it, the bare minimum.
It started in the test tank on the third pull, ran on the fifth.
The lake run to test and tune just now went well. I’m happy with the way the motor runs at WOT and idle when I’m not looking at it.
BUT….. when I look at it (cowl off) the flywheel, for lack of a better term, wobbles!!! It’s not loose. It’s torqued down to 45 lbs. But the wobble is noticeable, like a bent drill bit.
The motor does not shake. The mag plate does not have the same wobble. the flywheel does not hit or rub on anything.
Is it possible the flywheel is warped or bent? Is this a concern? A big concern?
thanks for any input.

April 19, 2023 at 12:37 pm #275308Sure, it’s possibly bent. Happens when somebody has used a puller that grabs the outside rim. A concern?? Let’s just say I have a fear of flywheels. I’ve seen what happens when one blows up. (not on me)
April 19, 2023 at 1:46 pm #275309In my recent FD-12 project, I found the flywheel had a slight wobble to it. During the dismantle and restoration, I found someone had stuck a shim piece inside the flywheel hub and there were some cracks around the flywheel puller holes. Not good. I would surely pull your flywheel off and take a closer look – if it has a wobble, it may likely be bent. I would probably be on the safe side and replace it. As Frank noted, if a flywheel lets go while running, it’s not a pretty sight.

April 27, 2023 at 3:43 pm #275673Thanks to all. Yes! It was just a wopped flywheel! I found another one “out back” and switched out the steel rings and all is well! I looked closely at the old one and a couple of the bolts holding the ring gear on show signs of being hammered on. I further checked the crankshaft by rope starting sans the recoil and it’s fine. And she’s a runner now. Going to drive it around Lake Talquin on the 19th and 20th!
And just so y’all know, this motor was given to me as a “parts motor” because the two hose to one hose conversion had failed, was left outside in frustration and had become “stuck”.
The fuel supply conversion had failed because the plug in the Reed plate hadn’t held. I put it back to the way it was meant to be.
And a couple taps widda persuader unstuck it and a two or three finger hone fixed the sticky spot.
Love it!
