      Hi,

My students and I have the lower unit of this old Johnson QD-11  (1949/50) put back together, but I can’t see how the shift rod locks into either forward, neutral or reverse.  This lower unit is different than the later model QD motors.  I don’t think it has the detents in the shift rod that are commonly found in the lower unit gearbox of other 50s motors.  Right now the shift lever has very little friction and no detents.  I see that the carb has a shift-blocker, preventing it from going into gear when the throttle is high, but still not a detent. Does anyone know what I’m missing here?

      Thank you,

      Stewart

I think I may have figured out my own problem. It looks like the cowling has the detents in it.  This design makes it really dangerous to test the motor without the cowling!  I guess I won’t be doing that.

I have a ’51 and I think it is the same as yours.  The detent is the notch in the hood.  Crude but it works!

Yeah, the 5.5/7.5s had the detent in the gearcase, but the later 10hps had no detent in the gearcase, they relied on the spring loaded shift detent arm bolted to the powerhead…
