      Hi All
      I have been resurrecting a 1937 Scout.
Unfortunately the fuel tap has a slow leak and won’t shut off fuel to the carburetor.
I replaced the packing round the shaft as there was a bit of a weep round that, then noticed that fuel is still leaking into the carburetor.

Needless to say I am hoping someone might know a “trick” to fix it.

Thanks once again in advance for any help.

PS. I have a spare tap on a tank off an Evinrude Pal and unfortunately that leaks as well!

Were you able to remove the valve stem?
Either wear, gunk, or corrosion on the valve stem
and seat most likely is your problem.
If you get the stem out, you might be able to
clean the valve and seat up with some fine steel wool.

          Thanks Buccaneer for your suggestion.
I tried your method which did improve the seal, but after a bit more head scratching, I decided to “take the plunge” as the saying goes…….

I removed the valve stem with the packing nut attached, ground the riveted area off that holds butterfly onto the stem with my dremel, punch the stem out of the butterfly, put the stem in my lathe and remachine the the taper after which I reassembled the tap, soldered the butterfly back on the stem and “Hey Presto !”, no more leaks!

Just to be sure I left the tank overnight full of fuel and this morning there wasn’t any sign of leaking!

Thanks again for you suggestion which put me on the road to success.

Glad it worked for you. A guy probably only gets one chance turning the
valve stem down on the lathe!
