Greetings. I picked up this 2 cylinder engine yesterday. Owner said it is from the 40’s or 50’s. I have given a link with some pictures and any model /serial numbers I can find. I am thinking Elgin.
Since i want to get this running again I would appreciate knowing year/ model/ etc. The link is

The coils seem to be newer rubber and not all cracked.
Question: one of the Carb bolts is snapped off. Is that a stud that I can back out of the base plate? If not what would you do to fix it? I guess I would need a welder for christmas to extend the bolt.
Thanks Ralph
December 19, 2019 at 4:12 pm #189620If I’m reading the first 3 digits of the ID number correctly, that would be a model 571.58601 which would be a 1947 model 5.5hp motor. The 3 digits of the motor ID number make up the last 3 digits of the model number. Here’s a link to Elgin model numbers.

You should be able to back the broken carburetor stud out once you remove the carb.

RalphDecember 19, 2019 at 5:37 pm #189626Ralph – in one of your pictures there is a number 601-7165 which is the motor ID number. The 601 represents the last 3 digits of the Elgin model number 571.58601 and the 7165 is the serial number of your motor. See if this link works – it is a listing of Elgin model numbers.
