It’s finally warming up outside and I’m getting to the point where it will be time to take the flywheel off my 57 Big Twin Evinrude and renew what I can in the spark department.  I see that my plug wires are connected to the plug boot with a spring.  Part number 510231 I think.   Not really sure how that works.  Normally I would just dive right in and take one apart but I’m afraid I’ll just wind up with two pieces that I don’t know how to put together again.  Not really sure if I need new wires, but I’m fairly certain it won’t hurt.

The rubber boots pull straight off, over the spring terminal inside.
A little WD40 or similar helps them slip off easier.
There’s a pointed end on the spring terminal that pokes into
the wire core of the spark plug wire.

        Prepare to be boarded!

Evinrude Johnson OMC 0510231 - Spring Terminal

          Thanks Buccaneer,

Still having trouble wrapping my head around this one.  I’ll get a closer look at it tomorrow.  I’m sure it can’t be all that complicated.

Edit:  Just found a video of a guy replacing the same type of terminal on a weed whacker.  I get it now.  Easy Peasy.

I trim about 1/8 off the wire to allow the wire to be exposed and flaired . just me

              An approach:
              1) Slide rubber boot on the end of the wire (Yes, some WD40 first),
              2) Move boot onto wire until about 1/4″ of wire protrudes past big end of boot,
              3) Grab the coil part with a pliers,
              4) Place coil against end of wire,
              5) Press barb through rubber until the wire section between the barb and coil is parallel and against the rubber of wire,
              6) Slide boot over end of wire until coil is in the center of the big end of the boot.

Soaking the boot in hot soapy water makes all go much smoother

                  see pic 2

clip the wire end     and   then the  pin is simply punched in the center of the sheating  to reach the  wire conductor  and  you then insert it in the boot.

when done take a ohms reading back to the coil …should see 4-8 kohms

The lazy guy I see in the mirror each day goes to Tractor Supply. They have wiring harness sets of correct size and material Made in USA. Price is right, all new material. The boots are slightly larger so they may not work in applications where space is limited.
