Today I got spark on a Johnson A that I bought a while back and just put a new condenser on, but while I have gotten it to spark with the flywheel just on top and tightened down, I have not been able to get the two flywheel keys to line up when I try to put the flywheel on to actually have it on and functional.  Does anybody have any advice on how I should be positioning the two keys so that the flywheel will go on without knocking the keys out first?  Prior to this, I have only succeeded in knocking the keys onto the mag plate every time I put it on.

What I do when the keys are that loose is take a punch and put some dimples in the sides of keys large enough that the hold the keys in the crankshaft.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Tubs suggestion is about the best one you’ll get, but take the time to make sure the keyways aren’t damaged because those keys usually fit in there pretty snug, so if they’re so loose they fall out when you put the flywheel on, something funny is goin’ on…..

The flywheel took a good hour of heating and pressure to get off and then I had difficulty getting it off because somehow one of the keys got kinda stuck and the other one did not….so that created a whole mess and I suppose that a very slight amount of material could have gotten shaved off the keys or where they fit into in the process…not so much that it would cause issues but enough that it does not fit very snugly. I suppose there also could be resistance in the flywheel keyway because they will stay in place without falling out before I try to put the flywheel on.  I will try the dimple method.

It’s not so worn down that solder would do any good…that would make it too large.
