Go to ‘Resources’ at the top of this page, then to Links, then scroll down to “For the Old Outboard”, then Art Dekalb’s site; on his site click on ‘Art’s Extras”, then his ‘Five point plan’. It’s a great intro to what you need to know.

16:1 fuel mix is mandatory for that motor!

Bad news & Good News…Coils and ignition wires often need to be replaced. Real Good News is ignition parts and coils are widely available and reasonable. Getting to impeller is easy and like coils usually need replacement…also widely available at reasonable price. You might as well order a carburetor kit too…just in case. Though I am partial to Early Little Mercs, I can see why the Johnson Evinrude 3 hp twins are a great first outboard project. A word of caution, before spending dime #1 be sure the motor is free of issues. Some old outboards were put away for a reason…others were left too long in wet and or freezing storage location. Salty or polluted water have never been kind to aluminum or steel. It helps to know history of your motor….grandpa’s favorite fishing motor is likely to fewer surprises than something sold as is.

Plan to get it running and use it on my vintage 12 ft aluminum boat.. I have restored many boats over the years ..
