Trying to help out an old friend with his Dad’s Brooklure 5 HP Model 230-51-5D…I pulled the flywheel and filed and gapped the points. It runs well now after not having spark before. However, the telltale is not spitting any water. There is some water coming out of the upper leg. It doesn’t get too hot but I’d still like to replace the impeller. The problem is that I can’t find one. This model is a direct drive and the impellers I’ve found are for newer models with shifting.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for finding this impeller and any other useful information that might help me with this outboard – especially regarding the impeller replacement??
Thank you
October 24, 2019 at 12:34 pm #185835Brooklure was a brand made for Spiegel, which was a big -time mail order house in the 1950s. These motors were made by OMC’s Gale division, which means they were nearly identical to Johnson/Evinrude, and many parts interchange. That model was made from 1951 – 1954.
DaveHere is some info on that model:

or the 5 vane impeller running off the drive shaft?

October 24, 2019 at 7:33 pm #185846There are manuals at http://www.richardlpaquette.ca/vikingmanuals.htm
The Factory Service manual:
http://www.richardlpaquette.ca/GaleProducts1951-1963ServiceManual.pdfSays your model number crosses to Gale Model 5D10
This Viking parts manual should cover the internals (but not the decorative bits):
http://www.richardlpaquette.ca/5D10V%20Parts%20manual.PDFWhich shows it as as a model with Forward and Neutral (based on the Johnson TN series), which uses a vaned impeller.
This page describes how to adapt a currently available impeller to the Johnson TN:
http://www.pochefamily.org/outboard/ImpellerConv.htmlI’ve never owned any of the models with this lower unit, but I’ve seen many warnings to drain the oil before removing the lower unit, unless you don’t mind oil all over the place!
