on my CD11 tilt lock locks  DOWN   in reverse only hence the name  REVERSE LOCK

if you are looking for a tilt UP lock there is none  see manual page 392… a short piece of  dowel or 2×2 on a small chain  works great ! 🙂

free downlaod for oldies   print and bind locally  or store on your PC  or laptop

Tilt up lock is achieved by tightening tilt bolt until engine stays up on its own

So starting procedure on stand to counteract the pull rope force is to start in Reverse or use a dowel or a block of wood?

no reason to starting  reverse if the engine works ok    if the tilt  is   tight enough has suggested  by Michael the engine will stay down …

dowel is ok trailing if the engine needs to stay up securely .

Thanks, JACQUES and Michael for you knowledge transfer.  I have only had the motor for 6 Days and I cleaned the carb on Saturday, and Started it on Sunday.  Next is the leaking gear case for which I ordered the Sierra kit.  Only 3 days needed to get the Johnson to run.  I have spent 10 months to get a Ted Williams/Sears 7.5 hp (McCulloch) to run and the Marvel-Shelber carb has whipped me.  Johnson outboards are loads easier to work on.

sealing the GC is not hard but…tricky. Doing  a few helps so check utubes .   the spaghetti is tricky..consult the manual in the link provided  changing oring is tricky to on the shift shaft.

if you are going to do a good job replace all seal ( drive shaft  prop shaft   shifter rod seal   when all done  and closed up  do a GC pressuretest to see if it will hold around 10psi for 10 minutes..   perform a vacum test also  her are a few utubes

Just put one hand on the motor to keep it from tilting up as you start it.  Same for on a boat.

Also, when running the motor on a stand, it must have water.  It should submerge the impeller.  Maybe you know this already but I wasn’t sure when you said stand not barrel..

Don’t forget about checking/changing the impeller!  Many rubber impellers go bad over time.
