Johnson HS-39 Serial #

HS-39, serial 385947 is stamped into the engine block.

I have a Johnson serial # list that goes back to the 20’s; It has HA and HD models for 1939, but no HS, and the serial # places it in 1940 (when there were no XX-39 models documented). It has no recoil starter so it’s not an HD-xx model.

Is this the “Peterborough serial # problem”, or is it due to wartime confusion/leftovers, or dyslexia ?

Does anyone out there have a more authoritative source than mine (discount-marine-parts) ?

I always thought the -39 was for the year, so HS-39 is 1939.

My Canadian list says #39581-#39665 for HS 39.My ha 39 is a 330,000 serial number.

And my US built Johnson list does show a HS39 as 1939 model.It also shows 1939 numbers to be #315,167-355,166.Any chance the 8 is actually a 3?
