Howdy- For a winter project, I thought I’d try to resuscitate my Grandpa’s outboard–a 1936 Johnson J-80. It hasn’t been used in 40+ years. It seems like it has all it’s parts, and the piston doesn’t seem to be frozen (I can rotate the flywheel a bit). I’ve worked on old cars my whole life, but never messed around with an outboard.

Any advice on where to get step-by-step info on getting this thing running? I’m also curious what “fatal flaws” I should look for with the motor, before I invest any significant money + time in it.

And if there’s anybody in the Shoreline/N. Seattle area that would be willing give the motor a quick look over and give some advice to somebody new to the hobby, I’d be most obliged. Thanks.

Thanks for the advice–really appreciate it. Was able to track down an original Johnson service manual at my local library, so I should be “good to go” for the time being. Looking forward to tearing into the motor this weekend.
