Another area to check – I’ve come across a few of those 5.5s over the years that looked great on the outside, and turned over with a pull of the cord. BUT, they had a hole in the block where one of the connecting rods tried to escape, often due to someone believing they could run modern 50:1 mix in their old motor. Make sure you get TWO thumps every time the flywheel spins.

Like this guy taught us, these motors run on a 16:1 gas/oil mix. Not 24:1 or 50:1.

btw impellers are a bit tricky but doable 5.5 and 7.5 need to have the powerhead removed … not really a big deal

just don’t loose the parts on top of the driveshaft (seal …..seal plate carbon seal spring etc… (see picture of similar parts on the 7.5hp )

base gasket under the powerhead may…. need to be replaced if damaged… work slowly & carefully base gaskets are available

make certain to get the proper one for your 5.5 based on model number (shapes differ based on year of manuf.)

see pic. ex: of base gasket for the 6hp 6r74
