Does anyone know the differences between the Johnson QD-12 and the QD-13? Just curious. Thanks!

I don’t see any fine print in the parts manual that says it’s for both models…..

I think 1952 (QD-13) was the first year to use the split gearcase shared with the 53/54 Evinrude Super Fastwin 15hp. Prior to that the QD used a different gearcase which had ball bearings. The later split case used bushings. The QD-13 also uses teh universal magneto. I’m not sure if that is the first or second year of that so I’m not sure if that is shared with teh QD-12 or not. Someone will correct me if I am off by a year. The QD-12 is the only early QD that I do not have in my collection. I have a 10, 11, 13, 14, 15 and 16 so I’m not as sure about the 12’s particulars.

QD-12 and QD-13 both have the Universal Magneto according to where-used book.

I have a QD10, 13 and 14. I’ve always believed that the 12 and 13 were mechanically near identical… I bought a QD 12 gearcase to replace the one on my QD13. I haven’t got around to doing the job but it is near identical if not identical to the busted up QD 13 gearcase. Hopefully if fits! The Joe Outboard site has a nice comparison of johnson parts. According to this document my gearcase should fit.

A little information is a dangerous thing!

If the QD-12 and 13 both use the universal magneto and the same split gearcase, I’d call them mechanically identical. Thank you for confirming this and correcting my assumptions. That is good information to know.
