                It IS something special. Maybe more than any other motor, it put Mercury on the map for real, as a company.

                  The earliest models, supposedly about the first two thousand serial numbers were simply called KE 7. These motors have the square ID tag with no mention of the word Lightning on them. Same motor though.

                    First model. Cast trim, rather than added stainless trim. Same motor other wise.

                      KE7 Lightning is a Good Motor! I ran mine on a hydroplane for years, (not with special racing gears) revving higher RPMs than it was designed for. Only had to replace one reed. I double the oil in the gas and go one heat range colder on the spark plugs for hydroplane use on any motor I put on it.
