      Going through a KE7 for a friend.

Got all new ignition in, thanks Jim

Any tricks to setting these. I rarely venture to the dark side. I see the cam is built into the flywheel, so how does one set them with the flywheel off?

Also thanks to Joe Poole for a bunch of other parts I needed like carb kit, impeller, tiller grip, and many other items.

I got a new fuel tank filter from Joe, but the old filter threads broke off in the brass fitting. I cannot get the old stem out, so cannot screw in the new filter. Any ideas on that? Or does anyone have another brass tank fitting? I don’t need the filter, just the fitting.

      Thanks

put a inline filter in it and be done with it. the ignition with flywheel off if it has a cam turn the motor till the rubbing block is at the widest opening and set at .018 then goto the other points and do the same. some had 2 holes in the fly wheel the cam is on the flywheel then you work thru the holes to set doing it the same way. hope this helps 1 914 310 7086.

Thanks Dave. Got her sparking good now.

I guess to torque these flywheels without special socket put a wrench on her with a rag and give her a few whacks? Not scientific but….

Anyone have a parts breakdown for the tillotson carb and the static settings for it?

simple carb not complicated. setting is 1 1/2 open from lightly closed on the high speed if the idle goes in from the front use the same if from the side use 3/4.

Thanks Dave. Found this page as well for anyone looking for parts breakdown.

Chris, I don’t know what carburetor you have. The KE-7 was originally sent with a AJ-19A carburetor. The service replacement for them was the AJ-29A carburetor that was used for the KF-7. I have found that the idle screw on mine like to be out no more than 1 turn, and even less. The idle will have to be reset after you set the high speed, but can get it close. These are great running motors, and yes, I adjust the points through the window in the flywheel.

                  Thanks Steve.

Here are pics of the carb, and some leftover items I need to remember how to assemble 🙂

Story is, a fellow brought it to me a couple years ago to mechanically restore for him. He had brought me many motors in the past. Well, I haven’t heard from him in about 2 years now. Also have one of his 60s 33hp OMCS I finished at the same time. I normally did all OMCS for him, this is my first Merc full mechanicals job, told him I would practise on him.

Figured I should finish this in case he ever comes back. Don’t want him to come back after 2 years and Im still not done.

I see a Bendix magneto, Many like the Phelon better but I too have a few Bendix’s mags. Just pay attention to detail & everything should work well. While installing the flywheel be sure to have the points sets open much so the rubbing block on the points don’t get damaged. Nice motor but runs better with the KF7 model 29 carb. The AJ 19 had issues I hear. Look in the manual they are almost the same except jet sizes. Good luck!

the coil wires should come out towards the rear.
