New to me, 1960 30 HP, electric
      1) what is the battery voltage?
      2) any recommendations on changing the water pump.
      3) I’m not able to shift the LU. I think it’s in forward now.
      Thanks Jim

        1) Uses a 12V battery for starting.
        2) I’d invest in the OEM service manual (part number C-90-25500). Will cover the water pump, and much more. Will pay for itself in saved frustration.
        3) Depending on what it’s doing, it may have been installed incorrectly after a previous water pump service – not uncommon for them to jump into forward with the lower unit off, then get installed without properly aligning the shift rods (upper and lower). A bit tricky, but not difficult. Again, manual is helpful here, too.

This is the book that Chinewalker was talking about. I use mine all the time.

There are a lot of fans of the Merc 300. A very nice motor.

Thanks guys, i spent some time searching on the JOM site and got that this motor is held in high regard. also don’t touch the magneto without the book. I needed the battery voltage so i don’t blow up the alternator. Hope to start it soon if possible but it’s getting cold out there i want to see what I’ve got before hard water sets in. Thanks Jim

Shift problem may be frozen reverse locks. disconnect 1 of the yellow wires in the rectifier and you wont harm the charging system. 1 914 310 7086. Dave.
