Hello,

re 60s/70s/80s mercury belt replacement

I know many remove the flywheel from the central hub which I  believe is not the correct way to change the belt.  So what is the correct way to change the belt with the stator in place?

It seems what ever I try the belt is being contorted more than what I would like to see, and I do not want to damage the belt.

Looking in the manuals both Mercury and aftermarket, they all seem pretty silent on how to do this.

Michel your not getting much help so far.  I can tell you how to get the timing belt off a 56/57  Mark 55.   First align the timing marks and take a picture or do some thing to help remember how they were aligned.   Turn the motor over slowly the timing marks should be easy to see. Take the nut off the distributor pulley that the belt runs on.  Take the nut off the flywheel and use a puller to get it loose.  Lift the distributor pulley up and off to get some slack in the belt.  The flywheel and belt should lift right off.   When you put it back on it might take a couple tries to get the belt on the right cogs so the timing marks align.

First, why are you replacing the belt?  These belts normally do not wear out.  Many old 4-cylinders are still using the original belt.  As for changing the belt, after removing the cover on the magneto drive pulley, the belt can be pried off the pulley without removing the pulley.   Of course the flywheel must be removed using the correct three arm puller–the type that uses bolts screwed into the flywheel, not the kind that uses jaws on the outer edge of the flywheel.  Follow labrador-guy’s advice on the timing marks.

It is a little tricky I’ll gather up some photos and reply in the next day or so if someone hasn’t already. FYI Stator will have to be removed to install new belt. Remember 50’s engineering not to say 2026 any better!!😳

Engine is currently manual start , so belt removal/install is easy as no stator.  Swapping over to electric start, so now have a stator to deal with.  I know how to time the belt, just need some pointers on install under the stator
