      Hello
I’m not familiar with mercury motors. My nephew asked me to
find out what year his 20hp motor is.
It’s a fairly recent motor, I just don’t know how recent.
      model# 1A20201LK
      serial# 1RO14866
      Thanks for any help

No expert here, but I do know Mercury is a tough nut to Crack if you don’t have enough information.

Do you know anything else about the motor? 2 stroke, 4 stroke, 4 stroke carb? model name?

Merc does everything by serial number, but I can’t find a decoder that will do that without more info.

          I’ll keep looking

Again, not versed at all on Merc stuff. Go to this site and see if what they say makes sense to you. Either your motor is post-1997 or the serial# is copied wrong?

I don’t know. Page says merc puts year info on 97 and newer motors and your serial doesn’t come even close to matching pre 96.

I’m confused. Perhaps a pic of the I’d tag?

Googling that model number comes up with a bunch of people selling that model currently.  Nevertheless;  Date of Manufacture is different.  They may still be selling stock that was built/purchased years back.

Mercury Marine themselves offers a serial number look-up and an associated Parts Finder.  As has been typical with Mercury;  model year is insignificant when it comes to ordering parts.  Everything is done by the serial number.

Your Parts Manual here:  Search by Serial Number:

                https://public-mercurymarine.sysonline.com/Default.aspx?sysname=NorthAmerica&company=Guest&NA_KEY=NA_KEY_VALUE&langIF=eng&langDB=eng

I know this does not answer your specific question  (What year is my motor).

I was trying that too. My 95 I/O shows the year using that tool, but not for his. Prob cuz it’s post 97?

Supposed to be on the ID tag now. Who knows?

At this point I’m thinking a letter to Mercury? Depends on how motivated you are, if it’s not that important tye okay. If it’s really crucial, then I would write the letter.

Remember to be 1000% complimentary about the Brand and how much you are looking forward to another motor. Butter them up, who knows how much info you might get?

                      Good luck
