I have a decent model R Evinrude, ’27 4 hp. The carb is shot due to pot metal fatigue. I found a Mercury? carb that will physically fit, AJ 38 AX, probably off a chain saw-not outboard. Anyone else tried something similar?

At Bill A’s advice, I’ve used a Johnson J carb on a Model N. It should work on the R if your carb adapter flange is intact. The Tillotson from a Neptune opposed twin would be closer to original. But the AJ carb will probably run better.

Which R do you have? The early one with the Model N Sportwin style lower unit? Or the later one more like a T Speeditwin?

Found a NOS carb body. Now to try and remove some pieces.

I only ran it briefly to confirm the motor ran. I didn’t have a lot of time on it.
