      Hey Fellas,

I saw this motor advertised on CraigsList. Being described as a 1930s Johnson. Anyone know what this motor is? How does it look to you? There seems to be a lot of grease on the powerhead in the 2nd picture which kinda worries me.

      Thanks.

Johnson 200 or 210, can’t tell without seeing the back.

its not grease, its patina, and its nothing to worry about. In fact it may have served very well as a preservative of the original finish.

And it washes off with mineral spirits, varsol, lacquer thinner, gasoline, WD-40, take yer pick.

It’s nothing but dirt that has accumulated from sitting. Motor has obviously been laying on its back for several years, judging by the way the rubber spark plug booted melted and dripped onto the side of the tank. Tank looks relatively un-beaten up, by the way.

I thought the 200’s came with the cast muffler with fins on it?

I was unable to go and look at this motor so I have now posted the CraigsList ad in the ‘Leads for Motors’ section if anyone is interested.

Yup, a 200 with another muffler grafted to it. Just like my F-70 has a cast 200 muffler on it instead of the original soup can type. Parts can definitely get swapped around in 80+ years! ☺
