It’s been awhile since I messed around with some of my older (pre-1955) johnsons but I was trying to start a qd-14 and noticed there is no choke? I have run this motor before but it’s been about 5 years. I held the arm on the carb to close the choke (cowls removed) and it fired right up. But why is their no choke to pull out like on the 1951-1954 big twins?
Even looked in the owner’s manual and found no reference to a choke.

      ???

        It uses a primer instead of a choke . . . 😉

The QD-14 should have a primer, not a choke.

ok, so just like the td-20s, etc.

I was always under the impression that the priming of the remote fuel tank was responsible for filling the carb with fuel. So, I can see the need for a primer on an attached tank (td-20), but why the need for an additional primer on the qd-14?

The primer squirts a bit of fuel into the intake manifold to create a rich mixture for starting. Same thing that a choke does. Except the choke only does its thing when you pull the starter cord. The primer does its thing before you pull the rope. Hopefully then it is ready to go on the first pull. Or second —
