As a guy just trying to learn and chase a dream I got myself into a bit of a head scratcher. I was recently passed along my grandfathers evinrude. As anybody would I checked the data plate pulled up the information a good to go. That was until I started looking into the parts diagrams and found the 1983 evinrude 25hp standard shaft motor was a lie. Years ago the transom mount must’ve broke and my grandpa replaced it with one that worked. He surprisingly didn’t bring the data plate over. As I continue to dig through all the resources and forums and references I can online can anybody help me try to understand this?
Information I do know:
2 stroke
15” shaft
1969-1978 (closest estimate I got from service techs)
Electric start
Tiller
Freeze plug marked : E3597774
Freeze plug has a “M” stamped on it as well.
Pin drive propellerill attach a bunch of pictures but please keep in mind my grandfather painted and made some “custom” modifications.
March 20, 2026 at 6:00 am #310723If your grandfather painted the motor like a “camo” green (Johnson had a green like that in those years too), I think I see a light blue underneath that would indicate Evinrude.
1969-70 Evinrude 25 HP was darker blue and had a different style bottom pan to accommodate a different style hood.
Around ’74 they went with externally mounted coils on the cylinder head because of a different ignition system and yours doesn’t show that.
Which would narrow the years down to ’71-’73 Evinrude.
I think the last year for pin drive prop was around ’77 before going to spline drive.
I don’t have a serial number chart for the 70s so I can’t determine anything from the number on the freeze plug. The “M” I think stands for “Marine” corporation (I could be wrong) but OMC used that to identify their OEM parts. I don’t now how far back they started doing that.
Pictures of the whole motor? Cover/hood design, color, decals can help determine the year too if those aren’t painted over. Even the intake/bypass covers and lockout lever assembly might give clues.

March 20, 2026 at 10:34 am #310765OK, well that midsection ID spells out a 1983 Evinrude 25hp, which is not where that powerhead came from. The number on the block core plug is the engine’s serial number, which is near impossible to cross reference to the model number. The “E” on the serial number just means this Johnson was built at the Milwaukee Evinrude plant. The “M” symbol stands for “Outboard Marine Corporation”, parent company to Evinrude and Johnson back then.
Good ol Gramps did some mixing/matching here. Probably took those stern brackets from a junked newer engine to fit on his old one. Do you have the engine cover? Has it been painted over? Post a picture if it is original, that can help narrow down the year/HP.
That light green color was first used in 1967, then again in 1968. Johnson went to a dark green in 1969-1971. Back to light green in 72. This engine has the standard OMC magneto ignition, so I am fairly confident it was produced in one of these three years.

Sadly cover was painted black I can barely make out the decals underneath I will try and get clear photos in sunlight tomorrow. When looking on Crowley most parts seem to be a mix of cross referenced pieces here and there due to parts being obsolete. I’ll try and get a bunch of photos tomorrow in the sun to post thank you for the information
