I started working on a ’56 7.5hp Johnson that I purchased at our Traverse City MI meet. I found that the water pump impeller has a nylon hub, it was crack and it looked like it was slipping. First thing I thought was a cheep junk impeller but then I found the (M) designation on the rubber hub. Usually that M signifies OEM parts. I hope I don’t have any more of them in my fleet! Has anyone else ever ran into this?

May 13, 2026 at 4:02 pm #318669Common part available on Amazon , vintage outboard.com, iboats etc… some cheapy “China” impeller cores have been known to “slip” but that was mostly brass cores not plastic… does your cracked core slip if you try to trurn it ??? are you just concerned… or did you have an overheat problem with your 7.5hp ??
Chose correct kit year !!! powerhead base gaskets have specific shapes !!! impeller# 18-3001 Sierra

May 14, 2026 at 10:21 am #318765I have seen that “M in a box” symbol on other service parts, like for appliances and washing machines. I suspect the its from some huge after market maker … perhaps in China

May 23, 2026 at 11:14 am #319706The ‘M’ is OMC’s trademark. The following is from Googles AI.
The OMC ‘M’ trademark<!–TgQPHd|[]–> refers to the logo of the former Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC)<!–TgQPHd|[]–>, a major American manufacturer that produced boat brands like Evinrude, Johnson, and Gale. The trademark features a capital “M” encased within a stylized, angled, or square geometric box.
OEM Verification:<!–TgQPHd|[]–> The stylized ‘M’ was used by OMC as an official proof-of-authenticity mark. It is commonly stamped on genuine factory parts (like ignition coils and water pumps) to show they are Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts rather than third-party or aftermarket products.

May 23, 2026 at 9:34 pm #319755M is OMC and by looks it was ready for replacement just due to age. I havent noticed a Crack in any of the plastic ones ive removed but honestly havent paid much attention to them since they’re getting replaced.
