‘Temperamental’ might have been a better word to describe the Low Tension mags as a bit of oil or dirt on one set of points would affect the running of both cylinders. The points are wired in series and need to be set exactly the same and have to have clean surfaces to keep electrical resistance down and to function properly. They called for a 581419 condenser which was often replaced with the more common 580321 condenser which did.t help the condition of the points any. Since the points work together, it’s highly recommended to use a timing tool when gapping them.

In defence of these mags, there’s nothing really wrong with them and they do work great when they are set up right and maintained. In fact, I just did one on a ’74 Johnson 9.9 electric start and the motor is running flawlessly. The new NGK plugs help a bit to.
