I’m attempting to rebuild my 1956 Evinrude 3 hp. I have a Sierra Tune-up Kit (18-5006). Everything looks pretty straight forward except I can’t figure out where the pads go.
Any other tips would be appreciated.
Thanks, Doug

February 27, 2024 at 12:49 pm #285339Thanks for the replies. There are no clips on this motor. How necessary are the felt wipers? I suppose I could make some.
I will order the manual.
Thanks,
Doug

Doug, if this motor was mine I would put some grease on the rubbing block of the points and forget about any wipers. Millions of automobiles on the highways use a little grease on the points rubbing block and it works fine. As the block wears the grease keeps it lubed. JMHO

February 27, 2024 at 8:55 pm #285354well… the oiler pad oils tha cam which reduces wear on the points rub block.
the clip is worth crazy money last time I looked … try to find a used one they are all the same. Somebody must have one in a parts bin… 🙂
the felt can be cut from a sticky felt pads.. install with felt on cam and moisten with 2 drops of oil I use gearcase oil

As Dale suggest you want to put some grease
on the back side of the rubbing block of the points.
Automotive points would come with a little capsule
of grease to be placed in this location. As the points
ware grease is applied to the point cam, prolonging
the life of the points.

February 28, 2024 at 10:29 am #285370I always assumed the grease was for the pivot point itself… the oiler pad takes care of the the rub block but I guess with no oil pad… grease would help… for a while

February 28, 2024 at 6:57 pm #285386Are you sure there’s no clip?
Have you already removed the coils, clip is tucked under a coil heal and not easily seen if the wiper is missing.
Here’s a pic of the clip and wiper removed, this may help.
