      Hi Guys,

I just started opening up a Johnson QD-16, and I had trouble removing the lower unit gearbox.  I read up on “Leroy’s Rambling” the procedure, and it didn’t seem different than most other motors.  I removed the shift rod coupler, and undid the 5 bolts holding on the lower unit, and it detached but didn’t want to lower more than a quarter inch.  I made sure the shift rod was disengaged. So, I pried it with some force and the lower unit housing came off but left the drive shaft still inserted into the crankshaft!  The little drive pin in the shaft that engages the impeller made it’s own exit point out the top of the waterpump housing.

Am I supposed to remove the powerhead to remove the lower unit?  I haven’t seen any mention about that in my online searches.  And, if it is simply stuck and needs force to remove the drive shaft, is there a safe method to do that which doesn’t damage the driveshaft?

Thank you for any suggestions.  Stewart

sometimes the  drive shaft splines get rusted in the crankshaft.

patience required !  one option is to dribble some release agent down the upside down drive shaft and retry after a while.. THe oring may pose a problem if still installed so…..

removing the PH isn’t science  and will give you better access to the rusted splines ..soak soak soak

when done grease the splines install o-ring

see johnson  10th edition service manual page 423 for parts diagram.
