    All,

I have a 1960 Evinrude 18hp Model number 15032 with a slipped hub. I have spoken to 3 prop shops near me and none of them will replace this hub. Left with no other option I decided to attempt this on my own. I have ordered the replacement hub (VS-10) from HMS hubs and am trying to install it. I have followed their directions and I’m unable to get the hub pressed in. According to their directions I have cut the corner of the bub back 3/16″ at a 45-degree angle, soaked the hub in 180-degree water and then lubed it with a 50/50 mixture of dish soap and rubbing alcohol. When I tried to press it in it appeared that the hub was starting to crack. I did confirm with them before attempting to replace it that I did not need a funnel to complete this installation. I know that I can “pin” the hub but I’m all about doing the job right. I have 2 hubs to replace and figured that I would reach out and see if there are any tricks that you could share with me or if there was a specific propeller shop that someone would recommend that I could ship my propellers too. I am using a 60 ton press to press the hub in.

For the cost of the hub and all the trouble installing it, you may want to consider a new prop.  Solas (an imported prop) makes excellent aluminum propellers, at reasonable prices.  I have bought several for a variety of motors over the last several years.   Example:  An 11 inch pitch prop for your motor is Solas #2111-093-11P .  You can buy them online at several places.  Wholesalemarine.com has that one for $73, and as a 1st time buyer there, they usually take 10% off that.   For some unknown reason, the photos of the prop online show it as a “through the prop exhaust” type, but it isn’t.   I occasionally pin a spun prop, but just to use as a spare.

I have heard from a member who has re-hubbed a lot of props  that cracking the old aluminum OMC ones while installing no hub is not a rarity.

        Dave,

Thank you for the information. I might just order the propeller you mentioned. I think that I will also try to get them pressed in as well since I like the challenge.  The motor is used at a remote cabin so I won’t be able to test the ones that I press in till I get there and not having a spare propeller that works is not an option for me.  Thanks again

JT here is my two cents on this subject.  The cost of replacements propellers sometimes is reasonable but sometimes the propeller you purchase is also spun.  I decided to try something to push the new insert in and the old one out.  I bought a ball joint replacement kit.  Clamped it in my vice and pushed out the old and slipped in the new, good as new!  The kit came with a guide sleeve that keeps the new insert from bulging.  I used the same 50/50 mix that was recommend as you did.  I was surprised at how good it worked!  I will try to post some pictures.  These pictures are from a 35hp OMC.   Pictures not posting, I tried twice!
