Hi can one of you knowledgeable fellows tell me in layman’s terms what the cut out switch is for on this 30 hp Johnson.?

It has new coils and i clean the points and the gap seems good. Tried to fire it up and only got it to back fire twice. Suspect that the fellow who put the coils in may have them reversed. Time to pull the carb and see what kind of shape it is in too.

Nice old motor hope i can get it running.

      Thanks

Cut out switch kills spark in one cylinder in case of a runaway situation so the motor can be shut down. It’s very difficult to kill an engine in a runaway situation short of breaking off a spark plug.

Try reversing the plug wires and see if it runs.
