Hi all, I am looking for a motor a little bit bigger than my Johnson 2.5 horse. Id like something that can get me going and is still affordable. I don’t care what year, but Id like to spend under $300 for a project or running motor.

It’s going to be fairly easy to get that. What specifically are you looking for? Is there an upper year? Max HP range?

Found these on the Baltimore craigslist

Well I don’t think you could go wrong with a 50s vintage OMC. 5.5hp, 7.5hp, or 10hp. What is your boat rated for?

On 12′ Tinnys, I like at least a 10hp. A QD will get my fat but up on plane with ease if need be.

With the right prop, and proper set up, a 7.5hp will do the job as well, but work a bit harder to do so.

If you are just cruising around the lake, and troll, the 5.5hp motors are great machines! Idle like a dream.

If you have a 14′ Tinny, My all time favourite pound for pound motor is the 18hp, ’57 or ’58 vintage. But that is just me.

I would not imagine you should have a hard time finding any of these in good running condition for you budget.

I don’t search for anything. I go to whatever craigslist location I want, put in roughly the price range I want, then select "Owner only" to get rid of all the crap that the dealers put up.
For those guys, I put in a price range of $2 to $400 (If you put in $1 or nothing on the low end you’ll get those fools that don’t put in a price and want to sell a $5000 boat)

You sort of have to get an idea of what people put for older motors.

Better yet put a wanted ad on this site. Hopefully , a member in your area can sell you a motor that has been meticulously gone over for a fair price!
