Not having a parts list for my little Johnson MD38 to look up piston ring
parts number, I found an Evinrude piston ring chart showing rings
for pistons of the same bore and ring thickness, of the same era.
When I went to install them today, I was disappointed to see that
the new rings were wider in “depth, by .020.
I cleaned the ring grooves, and tested the new ring, and they
seated with room to spare. Also checked end gap and decided
it was okay.
Also different, the Evinrude rings I received were for a “pinned” ring,
the Johnson wasn’t.
I went ahead and installed the new rings and put the piston in the powerhead.
So far all is well……. then again, I haven’t started it yet.
Am I looking at disaster on it’s maiden run?
