      I have a 1955 Johnson 25hp RD-17.
My manual says it is rated at 4,000 RPM.

Does that mean that is the maximum RPM I should run at WOT?
I’ve seen other posts mention that the ideal RPM is 4,500 RPM at WOT.

Right now with w 12″ pitch prop, I’m turning 4150 RPM at WOT in my ’55 Crestliner with normal loading. speed is around 24 MPH.
I could drop the pitch down if I needed to achieve 4500 RPM.

which RPM should i be trying to achieve?

You are within range. “Ideal” probably would be around 4500.
