Wondering if you could help I recently picked up a 1960 25hp Elgin .. person i picked up from had in Elgin boat and i dont have any of the controls, just battery cable’s etc.. i was able to figure out how to get the starter to kick over and that works fine. I just read your posting about the micro switch to ground points, im wondering if you know how to bypass this when i am manually turning over to see if any spark. I currently have none and before i remove flywheel to clean points id like to see if its just something like this, rather not dismantle to clean if not needed etc..

      thanks

I know this is a few years old, but I’ll join the fun because I think I have the same motor.  It was sold to me as a “1960 27.7HP” but I think, based on more reading, that it’s a 25HP.  No matter, it’s going behind a 13′ boat so it’s overkill no matter what.

I have electric AND recoil start but no charging circuit.  Im working on adding an independent charging circuit (unless someone can tell me how to thieve voltage from the mag coils).

This is my first outboard and it’s been fun to tinker with.

I’m not sure how you can do this (externally mounted alternator?) but I think the easiest way would be to find a parts motor with the needed parts and transfer them over to your motor.
