      Is one inch below the bottom of the boat (14′ runabout) about right for the speedometer pick-up?

        Sounds good.  More important is nothing to cause disturbance ahead of the pitot.

          If you’re going to beach the boat, fold the pitot up before reaching shore to prevent sand and other particles in the tube. Accuracy requires no contaminants..
