Hello all!
I purchased what was sold to me as a 1961 Sport Scott 27.7. It has both recoil start AND electric start, a tiller AND Elgin-branded remote shifter and throttle. When I pulled the cowl, there were two loose yellow wires in a sleeve exiting from under the flywheel. Everything else was connected internally and to two pushbuttons mounted on the lower housing – both momentary – one for the electric choke and one for the starter. I’ve downloaded every diagram I can find and none of them match this combination. There MUST have been some rewiring done at some time because there is a micro switch (ie limit switch) in between the two momentary pushbuttons that has been removed from the circuit. Oddly though, I can’t tell what would engage the switch – neither shifting gears nor tilting the motor affects the switch.
Can anyone advise of what needs to be landed where? I assumed I needed to install a rectifier from the two yellows back to the battery hot; however, when I did that I got a “clunk” noise from under the flywheel as soon as the battery was connected. That didn’t sound right.

It appears to be a 1960 25 hp without serial number I can’t verify the year.
They made this in a electric start with battery ignition & alternator which requires a ballast, rectifier, 2 yellow coils were mounted on the head no tiller. The manual model had tiller handle, magneto coils under the flywheel no ballast or rectifier.
First you need to identify if it is battery or magneto ignition, external yellow coils on head are battery, under-flywheel magneto.
What you have is someones conversion. I have the parts diagrams & electrical diagrams if you would like them send me your e-mail.
March 18, 2026 at 2:04 pm #310271Thanks, @PerryS and @Buccaneer. Unfortunately the data plate is wiped clean except the stamped “1917”.
The ignition is definitely magneto. I was able to get healthy spark from one HT lead last night. There are no charging coils and the mounting holes for them aren’t even drilled or tapped. I intend to swap the condensers side to side and try to get spark off the other coil.
When you say it’s a conversion, what appears to have been added or removed? Seems dumb to remove a powered ignition system from something that you’re going to run electric start on and seems difficult to add electric start to an engine that didn’t have it originally.

March 18, 2026 at 2:19 pm #310276What is most likely seeing it is magneto & tiller they put the electric starter & flywheel with ring gear on a manual start model.
I know you mentioned you heard a noise under the flywheel when you hook it to a battery you might have damage a coil or condenser.
March 18, 2026 at 4:30 pm #310299@PerryS – I think the noise was because I was trying to use the yellow wires as a charge circuit not a kill switch (damn wiring diagram). I ran them to a rectifier and back into the battery hot. That was evidently…wrong. Pretty sure there’s a bad condenser. Both coils ohm out identical to each other. I bought some replacements anyway. Once it runs I might add a charging circuit.
