I purchased a leg for my 15hp Johnson from Ebay.  My old one was leaking internally some place and I wanted to fix it.  I found one at a reasonable  price and when I got it I pressure tested it.  Shift seal was leaking so I pulled it down and fix it.  It look good inside and after a seal change it tested great.   I hauled it to the Big Fish lake and the motor ran good the gear case jumped out of gear something awful!    I tip it over and pulled it apart.  I went to my stash of parts and found a complete gear set.  I don’t remember what they were from.   Five bolt lower gear cases but the gears are different.  Did the ten horse have the finer gears?  Cross my fingers and post some pictures.   The shifter dog is also different.  The coarser gears looks to me like an improvement.   I counted the teeth and the gear ratio is the same.  Any thoughts on this stuff?

        Dale,

I have swapped stuff like this between 18hp’s of  various years with good results. What have you got to lose?

I Think you’ll find the straight cut gears whine quite a bit compared the hypoid gears. Some folks like that.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
