Two questions.  First, I picked up a small Johnson outboard.  No model number on the flywheel.  As a clue, the rope socket is held on by four bolts.  The motor is covered in a lot of crust. Does anybody know where I need to look for a model/serial number?  I have looked at the transom mount, and underneath the powerhead, but can’t find any stamp. I’m new at this, so don’t worry about offending me with the obvious.

      Thanks!

Can you post a few pictures of the motor?

I can’t think of a small early Johnson having 4 screws on
the rope sheave. I would think that would be a good clue
for someone that is really knowledgeable in the early
Johnsons. Is it a square gas tank motor? How many
cylinders? Is it painted a color or is it silver?

Don’t the J-70 and F-70 (maybe the 300) have that goofy domed rope plate cover with four screws?

Tore it down and found the plate on the power head under the flywheel.  It’s a 1934 F70.

              Thanks!

There’s an F70 on ebay right now with decent pictures in case anyone wants to see what an F70 looks like.

Is an F70  a little rare?  That’s a nuts price on Ebay!
