Kinda sounds like it pitched a rod if the crank spins freely….Spins freely in just one direction because the crank is probably pushing the broken rod out of the way. Jams when spinning it in the right direction cuz the broken rod gets caught on the crank….
Sure hope I am wrong though….Pretty tough to do this to an old Briggs….
