The problem with pinging in an outboard is you will not hear it. Even the shrouded OMC motors of the 1950s and newer are too loud when running to hear it. Until it’s too late and you start melting the piston top. I have an old Johnson PO from the 1930s that is a LOW compression motor that shows what pinging damage can cause, melted piston top deflectors.

Although those 1930s outboards were low compression, ( 5.5 to 1) there was no accurate stop on the magneto. You were advised in the instruction booklet to advance the ignition timing ONLY to the best running position. Pushing it over against the stop while having a load on the motor that did not allow it to run at full RPM always resulted in melted pistons.
