I have a Scott Atwater 16HP engine that has WICO X7345 coils installed. They are going bad and they seem pretty elusive.
.
I do have a couple of WICO X5460 coils and they are the same laminate diameter (5/8″).
.
Anyone know what the difference is between these two coils? Can they be swapped?
.
I see that a website (www.mcdonaldcarb.com) advertises a replacement coil that supposedly works for a variety of OEM WICO coils…..but there must be some difference between them all?
.
Thanks

I have put the OMS style coils on Wico laminates and they worked
just fine. I don’t see any reason the X5460 wouldn’t work. There
is no modification necessary so it should be an easy swap.
TubsDecember 6, 2021 at 9:36 am #250746As I remember them, there were two core sizes. Beyond that, there were two types of insulation material, the old original orange shellac which are nearly indestructible and the later black stuff that destructed (cracked) within a couple of years. Moving on, there were two types of spark plug wire attachment, tab type and plug-in type. Finally, there were the aftermarket ones, which you apparently have.
So, bottom line, if they fit the cores, use them. You may have to change the plug wires, but you are going to do that anyway, right?
December 6, 2021 at 10:01 am #250747Thanks you two; yes the coils that are failing are the “newer” black style and they are cracking badly but still work.
.
The X5460 are the orange style and are used on earlier 16HP Scotts so I agree; they should work fine…..or so I would think.
.
Frank; I do not have any aftermarket coils; although the ad above appears to be aftermarket versions.
.
Tubs; I know you have used OMC coils on the 7/16″ lams…….have you done so with the 5/8″ versions as well?December 6, 2021 at 2:05 pm #250757The note on the website that says “back ordered until spring/summer of 2020 is not encouraging.

The early Wico coils don’t have any covering on them.
The motors I have had with them would produce a
spark but they were all hard starting and if you could
get them started there was some kind of running
issue. Improvements were made and the later coils
were much better. The motor in this video had the 5/8
lams that I reduced to 7/16. Its not the easiest conversion
but I show the steps for anyone who may be having
problems the Wico coils and would like to try this option.
