Jim, thanks for the explanation. I’ll have to look again and see if
I can figure out what part the brass detent rides in…… I didn’t
notice where it would engaging in anything before.
What’s the idea behind the drive shaft spring? Slippage or cushion
      if the prop hits something?
Glad to learn about the gasket thickness importance!
      Thanks.

Look at FrankR’s diagram. The brass cone and detent parts are 3167 through 3169, The gearshift cam is part 3154.
The driveshaft spring was their first attempt to cushion the gearshift. A year or so later they eliminated it and went to a rubber hub prop.

Jim, I’ll try to clean up all the lower unit parts today and "make sense" of
how it all works. Is there a way to remove the ss water pump liner without
damaging it, so I can access the drive shaft bushing and needle bearing?
I hope there’s part numbers legible on the bearings so I can find
          Torrington or Koyo replacements.
          Thanks! Bucc

My 7.5 gave me similar problems. I pulled the foot apart with some force and found the prop shaft had rusted to the bearing. I wound up getting a new shaft from a good parts motor, replaced the bearings and seals and now its good. The lower unit definitely looks bent on yours though. The 5 hp is the only one I don’t have. I have the 3.5, 7.5 and 10 hp but the 5hp seams to be a little more rare up hear in the Toronto GTA area.I am slowly restoring the entire set to running. 7.5 runs, 3.5 and 10 hp are well underway. Send me a PM and I will forward you the scott attwater manuals in PDF format. They are available somewhere on line but getting harder to find. The Firestone is a re branded early scott with slightly different covers.
