Is this water pump impeller on "backwards"?
Looking at the steel rotor, one would think
it would work better as a "scoop" if it were turned
over, instead of a kind of positive displacement.

Nope – than’s the way they were. Virtually unchanged on the larger outboards (Elto Fleetwin, Evinrude Sport Four, Speeditwin +) until they went to rubber impellers in the early 1950s . . . 😎

Thanks Garry, from what I’m learning about this Speedster,
it sounds like it’s water cooling system is force ram first,
          then the impeller booster.

The impeller is more of a squishing than a scooping. Look at how the newer OMC rubber ones work. When in place they are also flexing back, not scooping.

I would imagine someone found many moons ago, that the rubber impeller with contact on
all sides was more efficient than a steel impeller, with much less contact .
I don’t remember learning this fact, but what brand came out with the
              rubber impeller first?

might have been Mercury, they were using them pre-war.

Not sure when the wobbler type of water pump went into use. I’m not too well schooled on that sort of thing.

Good question. Johnson TD/TN series and Martin both use wobble pumps in the 1940’s.

Thanks again to the Outboard National Archives, and chair head, Garry Spencer!
                      1938 it is!
I’m guessing first came the "wobbler" style rubber pump,
gotta wonder when the first, "modern style" rubber vaned
                      impeller came about. 🙂

The first Evinrudes with a rubber veined impeller were these 1948 models . . .
