      Hello everyone.
Looking for some information on a 1954 Elgin 7.5 hp. I have replaced the water pump impeller and coils, and cleaned carb. Motor fired on second pull and stayed running on fourth pull. It has water coming out of exhaust housing where the decal says cooling water flow indicator. While running in test barrel, the water flow stops and turns to steam. I don’t want to overheat this so I am asking for advice. I have read online that there is a washer in the water pump housing that has to be installed properly. I have searched online and have not been able to locate any diagrams of the impeller or the washer. I am wondering if it is missing from my motor? I replaced the impeller several months ago and do not remember seeing a washer. If it is missing would it cause this steam issue? Any advice would be appreciated.
      Thank you
      Rob

I was looking for information on your motor, but not finding the correct data.
Is your water pump the traditional 5 or 6 vane rubber impeller type,
rotor with carbon vane, or a "wobbler" type?

Thank you for responding. My impeller is 10 vane rubber type.

Not sure if this will be of any help, but it show the 10 vane style
impeller, but not sure what HP motor.

I would have to say mine is like the last diagram. I will pull it apart again and take another look. I do not remember seeing number 34 in my pump assembly.
              Thank you

If the old impeller lost pieces or whole vanes, they can get inside the block and cause problems.

The diagram is from a 1957 but shows a Water Pump Gasket.

Thank you for the diagram and parts list. I will pull mine apart and make sure I have all the parts in the right order. The old impeller was intact and surprisingly in good shape. I just thought it would be a good idea to replace it. This motor has been sitting for quite some time so maybe something is plugging up the cooling passages. I will try to flush it out.
                  Thank you

Somebody mentioned pieces of impeller causing blockage. Actually, that was pretty common on Elgins of that type.

To replace the impeller on this motor, does the powerhead have to be removed to disconnect the shift shaft?

No, it is disconnected behind the metal clip #26.
